A lot of attention is given to postpartum mood disorders like anxiety and depression, and with good reason. However, I would argue that it's just as important to prepare women for the realities of pregnancy mental health, especially given that postnatal conditions often begin during pregnancy.
Pregnancy is made out to be this joyous experience. For some lucky women, especially those who don't suffer from typical aches, pains, or complications, it is. For many expectant mothers, however, the truth is that pregnancy is a veritable roller coaster of emotions and not all of them positive.
Some negative feelings are a normal part of pregnancy, while others warrant professional help. It's important to learn how to practice pregnancy mental health self-care and to know the warning signs of something more serious — both for your well-being and for that of your baby.
